Resolve Slow Computer Startup Times
When you start your computer it will begin immediately to collect information from
various system folders. If there are too many of these files, due to having several startup programs, you will experience slow computer startup periods. It is important that you remove startup programs so that your computer may be quick to start.
To get to the System Configuration (at left) go to the Start button and in the search bar above it type in “system config” and then click on System Configuration. You can see what starts up at computer boot-up and what services will automatically be running on your computer.
When you install some programs, they will run in the background. You may find that there are several programs in the system tray that will be running even if you do not see their screen maximized. Certain mailing and chat programs will start-up when you switch on your computer. They will cause slow computer startup times and this can be frustrating at times. Apart from slowing down the start up periods, they also take a lot of system memory and you may have to exit them manually in order to have more system resources available for other programs to run efficiently.
You can stop slow computer startup times by removing the startup programs that run in the background. There are certain programs that come built into the operating system that you do not really need. You will need to remove startup programs that you do not need. There are several ways that you can disable background programs such that they do not run when you boot up your computer.
Adding More Memory
One of the most common “fixes” for computer’s with speed issues is adding RAM or memory. RAM is short term or working memory. (below)
Other methods that you can use to stop slow computer startup times include adding more memory to your computer. This can be done easily by going to the store and buying memory cards. It is important that you carry a sample of the memory card that you are using so the clerks at the store can give you the correct cards. It is important that you get cards that are compatible with each other and with your system so that you do not exhaust the CPU.
