Can The Registry Be Causing A Computer Running Slow Issue?

slow running PCThis is an important consideration. The registry is a data base specified area where configurations for the operating system as well as programs added to your PC. It is many times the reason for a computer running slow. The registry is discussed in detail by Wikipedia (click Here to go to the page referenced) in a lot of depth. The use of a registry was started with the Windows 3.1 operating system and is considered by some to have too many problems and should have been replaced or changed. To date nothing has been changed up through the Windows 7 OS.

Some of the limitations and problems with registries that they listed are:
• Installing and un-installing some applications because their files cannot be copied into the registry.
• Device drivers can be affected if the registry already has errors and affect the program.
• Certain applications will have to be completely in sync with the registry and cause issues when they are deleted rather than uninstalled.
• Registries and portable devices are causing problems.

As you can see there is much to be considered in a computer running slow and your PC’s registry. When Windows introduced Vista it made some changes that have helped at least some. Registry Virtualization in Vista and Win 7 will redirect applications to other areas rather than the registry if the applications does not meet the standards Window requires. This protect the registry from contamination.

The Wikipedia page also goes over manual editing of the registry. You can get to the registry by using the search bar above the Start button and typing in “regedit”. Inside you can find files by user, etc. Since this is something above most of our pay-grade it is not recommended that you make changes yourself. A wrong entry can cause irreversible and possibly catastrophic damage. It would even be wise to back up the registry before letting a professional edit it.

A good registry optimization software can probably help a computer running slow without the danger, hassle or cost of a manual editing.

Slow Running Computer

OK we all agree that there is nothing more annoying than a slow running computer. If you already learned from your ISP technical support that you are getting the right speed for your internet connection, you will need to dig deeper into why your computer is running very slow.

In determining the cause of the slow running computer, you should consider all the possible causes and then narrow it down to the most possible one. With your internet connection ruled out as a possible cause, you should now turn your attention to the computer hardware. Most of the hardware problems can usually be fixed by using downloaded programs that you can get from the internet.

One factor that can slow down your computer is a overloaded, cluttered and disorganized hard drive. The hard drive is your computer’s main data storage area and this is a common cause of a slow running computer. Windows operating system has internal ability to clear up this problem in your hard drive. You can just run the clean up utility disk from windows. To do this click on the “start” button, choose “all programs” then “accessories”, choose “system tools” then click on the “disk clean up.” It will take a few minutes for it to go perform this and will let you know when it is finished.

Doing a disc cleanup is similar to the fragmented hard drive (“defragging” that was mentioned earlier) that can cause a slow running computer. But they are two different operations and doing them both is important since they actually perform different functions. The combination of the running the disc cleanup and the defragmenting should help with your computer’s speed.

Virus and Spyware can also be another factor to make your computer run slow. Not only can viruses cause your computer to be sluggish but some of the anti-virus programs themselves can slow it down. At the start up of your computer, most anti-virus units will do a scan. These scans are good and important, but they do take up a large chunk of your CPU capacity while the scan is ongoing.

Again, checking all the possible causes of the slow running computer is a process of elimination as you check and then you rule it out the different ones. Once you determine its cause, you can fix the problem accurately.

And one of the most frequent factors affecting a computer running slow is registry errors or a corrupt registry. The registry is a very important part of your computer and needs to be free from any type of errors so that it will not get corrupted. You can get a registry fix, as well as registry cleaner software programs directly from the internet through downloading.

Registry Fixer | Speed Test

Before you decide on purchasing a registry fixer program try a speed test on you internet connection. You could call the tech support for your internet provider but that could take some time and maybe a long wait on the phone. Doing a speed test yourself is very simple. And if you find your speed to be OK then you can move ahead and try other possible computer running slow fixes such as with the computer’s registry.

But how do you do a speed test on your internet service? It’s easy, quick, and free. You do not have to rely on your internet provider’s technical people, you can find out for yourself and if you have a problem then call the techs. First do a search for a DSL speed test in Google and you will see several web sites offering free tests. You don’t even have to give the site any information. Simply click “Start Test” and the site will read your connection instantly and automatically.

I have tried several of these web sites and all work basically the same. Now granted they are trying to sell you something, maybe like a registry fixer or “speed up” software, while you are on their page using the free speed test. But you don’t have to purchase anything. Tests I have run in the past came back with 3+mb on download and .03+ mb on the upload speed. Yours may vary a lot from this depending on your type of connection or the level of service you are paying for. If you are on a cable internet service you will have much higher speeds than with a DSL. My speed fall with the range my DSL service has promised me.

registry-fixerIt could be you need to upgrade to a higher speed internet connection if one is available and depending on your uses and needs. Some internet providers offer different speeds for different prices so check that out.

Once you are sure you do not have an internet connection problem causing your computer to be slow you may then want to go to the next most likely cause: your computer needs that registry fixer.

If your next step is the registry please investigate by running the Free Scan at: Registry Fixer

Many of these programs are unnecessary and were simply put there by the computer manufacturer for various reasons or added by downloads or program installs. But you may not need them “running” and many times we don’t know they are even there, much less using up valuable capacity resulting in a computer runs slow problem.

How do you do this? All you have to do is to click on the start button and choose run, and a dialog box will appear. Type the word MSCONFIG and then click OK. Once this is done, you will be able to see the entire list of programs that are going to run once your computer starts up. You have to uncheck all the unnecessary programs that are on to the list, just leave the firewall and the antivirus, because these programs are very important. You can just run the rest of the programs manually, if or when you will need them.

Another reason for a a computer running slow is the virtual memory. If your computer has limited RAM capacity and your hard drive is fully loaded with programs and files, it will definitely run slower than you’d like. You can fix this problem by simply upgrading the RAM (Random Access Memory) of your computer; make sure that the additional RAM is compatible with your PC because there are different types and some of them will not work. If you regularly use several programs at the same time such as Windows Media Player, Yahoo Messenger, P2P downloads, and RPG game, etc., you must have a minimum of 512 Megabyte of RAM, this is usually enough to get four programs running simultaneously.

These are only few of what you can do if ever your computer experiences such problem.

So it is not abnormal for a computer to begin getting slower if it is used a a lot. Starting a program takes longer than usual (some programs couldn’t be opened at all) and error messages repeatedly pop up. Well, you may try some home fixes for the computer running slow matter yourself to increase your PC’s speed.

First thing to check out? What you should do is to look at your drives to determine whether they have adequate free storage space. Your pc uses this free space whenever it accesses a program or application (for other RAM or random access memory to help your Computer’s memory card). Depending on its capacity, at least 25 % of your computer’s hard drive storage space should be free at any time. If the hard drive has too many files and programs, then its’ high time that you delete or uninstall some of them.

While deleting programs, you must be cautious as some applications are linked with other programs (that removing them could cause the additional program to be inoperable). Uninstall the operations that you hardly ever use and are not necessary in the day to day working of your PC. Games, graphic intense programs as well as MP3 and video storing will use a lot of the available storage space and utilize a large amount of available capacities so keep these to a minimum.

Computer Registry: Look At The Root Directory

Everywhere you look you can find web sites talking about repairing slow running computers by fixing the windows registry. I realize a lot of people don’t really want to know how things work, but others like me would like to understand it a little better. I just like to have a little more information.

Now why is this computer registry so important and what is it anyway? You have probably read about its entry listings and errors and being unorganized. OK, let’s investigate the windows registry itself and maybe we will get a better grasp on this problem area. It sure seems that way to many people have computer registry or operating speed issues. So let’s check out the pc’s Registry Editor.

I know of two methods to get to the Registry Editor in your computer system so one of them ought to work for which ever PC operating system you’ve got. The first one is to simply type Registry Editor into the system search located just above the Start icon and click search and you should see it. Or, second, go to Control Panel then Accessories and click on Run. Type in RegEdit. And of course click on the Registry Editor.

You’ve now reached the pc’s root directory. Now do not touch anything, unless you know much more about this than I believe you do. There’s close to a 100 percent chance that there are things here that shouldn’t be, but it would be very unwise to start deleting things in here.

If you have read some of my previous posting you may remember my bookkeeping program. When I was finished with it on my computer I uninstalled it. Well as I look at the Registry Editor of my pc I see roughly 2 dozen entries still from that software as well as an integrated program for inventory that was also uninstalled. Performing a program uninstall simply does not eliminate these registry posts.

Your computer is probably like mine. And as you look at your Registry Editor you probably see logs on your own computer that shouldn’t still be located there as well. But more importantly you can now understand how a windows registry can become overfull and just plain stopped up.

Do not try cleaning this up yourself. Get more help with a professional registry cleaning software and let it do a Free Scan to see what shape the registry is really in. Go to: Computer Registry Fix
